Sleep Dentistry in the Evanston-Wilmette area
Sedation dentistry is a popular and safe way of being comfortable while having your dental work done. Many people avoid dental visits because of dental anxiety. They may dread the pain associated with dental work, or have had a difficult dental experience in the past that keeps them from wanting to go again. If this describes how you have felt about dental visits, then dental sedation may be a smart choice for you.
Sedation dentistry allows you to retain consciousness while experiencing dental work in a state of deep relaxation. Because some patients even fall asleep during dental sedation from being so relaxed, it is sometimes called “sleep dentistry”. Imagine catching up on sleep and getting dental work done at the same time.
Sedation Dentistry Options
At our North Shore sedation dentist, we provide options so patients can choose the sedation dentistry that best fits their needs. In addition to traditional nitrous oxide sedation (also known as “laughing gas”), we offer oral conscious sedation and IV sedation.
Oral Conscious Sedation
For cases where dental anxiety is more of an issue, we offer simple and safe oral dental sedation. An hour before your appointment, you will take a small pill containing a safe, quick-acting sedative with virtually no side effects. Because it makes you drowsy, though, you are required to be driven to your appointment by someone. Patients remain awake and alert after they take the sedatives, but are much more relaxed. And because sedation can cause them to feel like they are in a sleep-like stake, patients remember very little of the procedures performed.
With intravenous sedation, Dr. Mantis provides sedatives directly into the patient’s bloodstream. This makes it easy for the dentist to change sedation levels and give the patient more if needed. As with oral sedation, patients retain their reflexes and respond to questions and instructions after the sedatives are administered, yet retain scant memories of the dental work performed.
Sedation Dentistry process
With any sedation option, your vitals are monitored during the entire visit by our highly trained team of dental professionals. Once you are completely relaxed, Evanston sedation dentist Dr. Dino Mantis will complete your dental work. Depending on the amount you received, the sedative will wear off in two to six hours. Then your companion may drive you home so you can enjoy the rest of your day without pain or grogginess.
One of the greatest advantages of sleep dentistry is its efficiency. Because dental sedation makes you so comfortable, you can have up to six times more dental work done than in a regular visit. This is ideal for someone with a busy schedule. Call our Wilmette, Illinois sedation dentistry office today on the North Shore and request sedation dentistry to maximize your time and minimize your anxiety at the dentist.
